Walk and Talk Therapy

Counselling in Walk and Talk Therapy

Walk and Talk Therapy is a form of counselling and psychotherapy that takes your sessions outdoors, allowing you to engage in meaningful dialogue while enjoying the benefits of walking in natural surroundings. This approach not only helps you discuss your concerns with a therapist but also promotes physical activity and mental well-being.

How You Can Benefit from Walk and Talk Therapy

If you find that sitting in a traditional office for therapy sessions uncomfortable or confining, you’re not alone. Many individuals struggle to express themselves in conventional office settings. Face-to-face interactions can sometimes contribute to feelings of overwhelm.

The natural rhythm and flow of walking can help release feelings that may be stuck or blocked, or that are long-standing no matter what you try. It can help promote connections between your thoughts, your emotions and your sense of a situation. Clients often report experiencing small but significant shifts, new insights, and a welcome clarity. Walking allows some people to ground themselves quickly, and experience calmness, relief, and rejuvenation. This kind of therapy is safe and effective, fostering trust, communication, and collaboration between you and your therapist.

The Process of Walk and Talk Therapy

Engaging in Walk and Talk Therapy offers a transformative therapeutic experience, whether you’re new to therapy, considering starting therapy, or seeking a complement to traditional office-based therapy. It can serve as a primary mode of therapy or enhance your healing journey—so why not give it a try? Each client’s journey is unique.

The overall process generally includes the following steps:

Initial Consultation and Assessment
First, we’ll begin with an initial consultation where we assess whether Walk and Talk Therapy suits your individual needs. This can take place over the phone or during a standard therapy session. I will inquire about your mental health history and preferences for this outdoor format, discussing the potential risks and benefits before scheduling your first session.
Choosing a Meeting Location
We will agree on a convenient meeting time and location. At the start of our walk, I may suggest a specific path or invite your input. You will always have the option to modify the route and take breaks as needed.
The Walk and Talk Session
As we walk, our session will unfold similarly to an indoor therapy experience, tailored to your specific concerns. I will support you throughout the process and may suggest pauses for further reflection and deeper exploration.
Feedback and Adjustments
Whether you’d like to walk at a different pace, take longer breaks, shorten the distance, or you have other requirements, I will do my best to accommodate them. Throughout each session, I invite you to share your thoughts and feedback. We will adjust your Walk and Talk Therapy plan accordingly and as needed.

It is important to note that this step-by-step plan is a general framework for therapy and counselling. It is adapted and personalised based on the your specific needs and goals. My expertise and the your active participation in the therapeutic process are crucial for achieving positive outcomes in your welbeing. Through therapy, you are supported as you develop your sense of who you are or who you want to be as well as the necessary skills for improved well-being and quality of life.
